A Worthwhile Challenge: Finding the Elusive Balance on a Busy Dairy Farm

Finding a healthy work-life balance seems to be something we all strive for, but few of us ever really achieve. This balance is particularly elusive for those who are self-employed, and it’s even more challenging for those who farm for a living.

Finding a healthy work-life balance seems to be something we all strive for, but few of us ever really achieve. This balance is particularly elusive for those who are self-employed, and it’s even more challenging for those who farm for a living. The demands of dairy farming—cows that require being milked at least twice daily and acres of land that must be worked during ideal conditions—often result in long, grueling days.

The Inescapable Routine
Bestselling author Anna Quindlen once said, “You cannot be first-rate at your work if your work is all you are.” This sentiment rings especially true for dairy farmers. I know I hit a nerve with many of you because dairy farming isn’t just a job; it’s a livelihood. It’s not just what you do to earn a living; it’s your life. Farming has played a significant role in raising your family and is the backdrop for most of your childhood memories. I know this holds true for me, too. And what I have to say is treasure that, but also try to learn to carve out time for something that isn’t so backbreaking. Something that allows you to kick up your feet or at least allows you to hit the pause button from time to time.

Role Model for Next Generation
In today’s fast-paced world, the concept of work-life balance is becoming increasingly significant, especially for younger generations like Millennials and Gen-Z. There’s a growing recognition that career ambitions and personal well-being need to coexist in harmony rather than in opposition. This shift in mindset is changing workplace dynamics and expectations in profound ways.

Historically, the early stages of a person’s career have often been characterized by long work hours and rigorous effort. The idea was that the younger years were the time to ‘pound the pavement,’ investing extra hours to gain knowledge, earn respect from peers and superiors, and lay a strong foundation for future career growth. This was often seen as a rite of passage to secure a stable and prosperous future.

Avoiding Burnout
However, as we grow older, and as life brings new responsibilities, the need for a balanced approach becomes more apparent. Younger generations are increasingly recognizing that while dedication to work is important, sacrificing personal life and well-being for the sake of career can lead to burnout and unfulfilled lives.

Research has consistently shown that achieving a balance between work and personal life leads to higher job satisfaction and productivity. This is particularly true for Millennials and Gen-Zer’s, who place a high value on spending time with loved ones and nurturing personal relationships.

So, while dairy farming requires more work hours than majority of other occupations, I would encourage you to not only talk about what hours the younger generation are required to work – but also look at the hours you are working and see how your farm can establish time for everyone to push pause from time to time.
