In a report by the Center for Consumer Freedom (CCF), the group alleges the Humane Society of the United States donated less than 0.5% of its budget to local pet shelters and humane societies in 2008. That’s the latest year tax records are available.
A poll taken in February 2010 found that 71% of those polled believed HSUS is an umbrella group that represents local humane societies and 59% believe HSUS contributes most of its money to local humane animal.
The irony is that HUSU spent 10 times in its effort to pass Proposition 2 in California that what it donated to local pet shelters there, points out CCF.
Wayne Pacelle, CEO of HSUS, bristles at such comparisons, calling them “false accounting,” in an interview with ABN Radio in Ohio. He says that HSUS spends $20 million per year on direct animal care. Even so, this is still only about 15% of HSUS’ 132 million annual budget in 2009. Last year, HSUS spent nearly $31 million on fund raising alone.
