After a long day of working on the farm, nothing compares to the feeling of coming home. A comfortable place to unlace your boots, take a hot shower, cook a decent meal, and get some restorative sleep is just what the doctor ordered – and it’s something many of today’s farm employees prioritize when deciding to commit to a job.

According to Jay Canzonier, an extension support specialist for Cornell Agricultural Workforce Development, providing housing for farm workers is an excellent way to increase employee retention, heighten morale and boost performance.

“At its core, providing comfortable farm worker housing isn’t just a matter of goodwill—it’s a strategic investment resulting in season-long productivity,” he adds.

The Benefits

With the ag workforce in short supply and high demand, offering housing to farm employees can provide several benefits, including:

Increased Productivity: Employees living close to the farm can start their workday with less stress and commute time, leading to better punctuality and overall productivity.

Employee Retention: Providing housing can increase job satisfaction and loyalty, reducing turnover and the costs associated with recruiting and training new workers.

Attract Skilled Labor: Quality housing can make farm jobs more attractive, helping to draw in skilled and reliable workers.

Community Building: Housing fosters a sense of community and belonging among workers, which can improve teamwork and collaboration on the farm.

Operational Stability: Having employees nearby ensures that they can be more responsive to the farm’s needs, especially in emergencies or during peak seasons.

“In addition to the physical benefits of adequate farm-provided employee housing, a comfortable home environment fosters a sense of belonging, security, and dignity—critical elements for mental well-being and employee satisfaction,” Canzonier says. “A workforce that feels valued and respected is more likely to exhibit loyalty, dedication, and enthusiasm—engagement that results in workforce stability and productivity.”
