March Dairy Cow Culling Remains Strong

U.S. dairy producers sent 268,000 dairy cows to slaughter through Federally inspected plants in March

U.S. dairy producers sent 268,000 dairy cows to slaughter through Federally inspected plants in March, USDA reported this morning.

That’s 12,000 more cows than March 2010, a 4.7% increase. Even though producers shipped 19,000 more cows in March than in February 2011, the volume per day was down slightly. Some 12,450 cows were slaughtered each week day in February compared to 11,650 in March.

Commercial red meat production totaled 4.35 billion pounds, up 2% from a year ago and a record for the month of March.
