More Dairy Cows Go To Slaughter

Culling was up across the country over the July numbers, with the largest jump in the Midwest, up 25%.

USDA reported this morning that 245,000 dairy cows were sent to slaughter in Federally-inspected plants, a 6% jump from a year ago and a whopping 18% jump from July.


Culling was up across the country over the July numbers, with the largest jump in the Midwest, up 25%. Region 3, which includes Pennsylvania and Virginia was up 22%. And Region 6, which includes Texas and New Mexico, was up 20%. California and Arizona were up 10%.

Year-to-date nationally, culling is up 83,000 head, or 4.5%. The complete August report can be found here.
