USDA reported this afternoon that milk production rose 1.4% in November over last year in the 23 major dairy states. USDA also revised its October production estimate, now saying milk production climbed 1.6%, up 0.1% from its original estimate.
Cow numbers continued to build, up 99,000 head over last November and up 6,000 head from October 2008. Most of November’s output increase came from more cows milking, since milk per cow was essentially unchanged from a year ago.
Kansas led the nation in terms of increased percentage output in November, up 14.7% on milk with 10,000 more cows. But in terms of sheer volume, Texas was up 70 million lb. and 39,000 cows in November.
California’s cow numbers actually creeped up 10,000 head, but production fell 0.3%, or 9 million lb. Wisconsin’s November production increased 1.4%, with cow numbers up 5,000 head. New York’s production was unchanged from a year ago. Idaho was up 4.9% and 19,000 cows. Pennsylvania production dropped 4.8%, mostly on less milk per cow.
