Because of the sequester, the April report contains no survey data for state-by-state cow numbers or milk per cow.
Kansas showed the largest percentage increase in estimated milk production, up 6.4% (15 million lb.) over April 2012. Wisconsin production was up 1.3%, or 29 million lb. Minnesota was also up 14 million lb., or 1.8%.
Seven of the 23 major producing states reported production declines: Arizona, -1.7%; California, -0.2%; Florida, -2.7%; Missouri, -5.9%; New Mexico, -2.5%, Texas, -3.2%, and Utah, -3.1%. Texas had the largest decrease in terms of pounds, down 27 million lb. compared to April 2012. New Mexico was down 18 million lb.
