Milk production in the United States climbed 2.7% in August over last year, with estimated cow numbers trailing last year by just 24,000 head. But USDA, which issued the report this afternoon, says total dairy cow numbers declined 9,000 head since last month.
August heat stress in the Midwest meant milk gains weren’t even greater. Wisconsin showed just a 0.5% gain in milk production even though cow numbers were up 6,000 head. Minnesota production was also actually down 0.8% from last year. Iowa was off 2.7%, Illinois, -5.1%. Texas was also down 0.4%.
California more than made up for it, however, with milk production up 4.9% over last year.
And Idaho was up 7.8% with Oregon up 6.9%.
