Farms can be dangerous workplaces, especially during busy seasons. And on a dairy farm, what season isn’t busy?
Cargill, Inc. is partnering with the National Dairy FARM Program – Farmers Assuring Responsible Management – to help dairy farm managers identify safety hazards and opportunities unique to their operations, so they can build their own safety plans.
The project provides an online tool to help managers audit their own operations, while also viewing related advice and resources from Cargill and the FARM team. Among their safety tips are:
> Place stop signs or convex mirrors in machine shops and barns where machinery, workers and animals may intersect.
> Assemble at least one fully stocked first-aid kit, including instructions for use, and place it in a prominent and easily accessible location on the farm.
> Provide workers with high-visibility clothing to ensure they are noticed, especially in low-light or poor weather conditions.
To underscore the importance of bright clothing, Cargill is providing two high-visibility, reflective safety ball caps to every dairy that completes their “Actionable Safety Review” online tool. After working through the review, dairies will be provided a printed document that can be used to start a customized on-farm safety plan.
