USDA reported this afternoon that March milk production climbed an estimated 2.2% in the United States compared to March 2010. Cow numbers are also up an estimated 76,000 (0.8%) over a year ago and 17,000 head over February.


California production climbed 3.1%, mostly on the strength of better milk production per cow. The Golden State was up just 1,000 head over a year ago. Wisconsin reported 6,000 more moo bossies than a year ago, with year over year milk production up 1.3%. Number 3 Idaho was up 3.7%, with cow numbers up a whopping 21,000 head, or 3.8%.

New York was up 3.1% in milk, Pennsylvania was down 0.7% and Minnesota was down 1.5%.

Biggest percentage gainers were Arizona +8.6% with cow numbers up 17,000 head; Colorado, +8.6% with cows up 9,000, Texas, + 7% with cows up 16,000, and Florida, +6.3% on milk.
