Dairy Cow Slaughter Continues to Drop
Dairy cows sent to slaughter in federally inspected plants continued to dwindle in June, the United States Department of Agriculture reports this week.
In June, 199,000 dairy cows were slaughtered, down 21,000 head from June 2013 (-9.5%) and down 11,000 head from May (-5.2%). The June 2014 versus June 2013 numbers are even more dramatic, because there was more processing day in June this year. That means June daily slaughter was actually down 14%.
Year-to-date, 176,000 fewer cows have moved to market, down 11%. On a monthly basis, that means roughly 30,000 fewer cows being slaughtered.
