USDA says in its latest Crop Progress report 58 percent of corn is mature out of the 18 top producing states in the country. The 5-year-average is 85 percent.
As harvest picks up pace, not all of that corn is being picked for grain, especially in the dairy state of Wisconsin.
“The question now is how we blend and price [the silage replacements] too,” said Mike North with Commodity Risk Management Group. “Because if it’s late planted corn, it doesn’t have the same quality and I can’t pay the same per ton as I did with a decent stand of corn that’s ready for silage.”
