Corn conditions on par with 2015

The USDA's latest Crop Progress report showed corn planting is now all but wrapped up, with most states reporting at least 84% of corn in the ground. Pennsylvania was the one exception with 80% of corn planted.

Emerged corn is on a similar roll at 75%, compared to 81% last year and the five-year average of 75%.

For the first time this growing season, the USDA included a look at corn conditions in its weekly report. Currently 72% of corn is in good or better condition, putting it on par with last year's report of 74%.

Looking at individual states, two states in the northern tier of the Corn Belt had the best corn conditions in the country - North Dakota and Wisconsin. Both of these states reported 85% of their corn crop in good or excellent condition.

On the flip side, two states are pulling up the bottom of the pack. Indiana and Kentucky each reported 8% of corn in poor or worse condition, compared to the national average of 4%.

Soybeans: Planting near the finish line
The USDA reported soybean planting at 73% complete, compared to 68% last year and the five-year average of 66%. Michigan (70%) and Ohio (63%) are among the states to fall furthest behind their 2015 pace, but producers in these states also made up impressive ground from last week's report by advancing by 36 percentage points and 41 percentage points respectively.

Nearly half of soybeans have now emerged, making the 2016 pace similar to that of last year (44%) and the five-year average (40%).
