USDA Releases State by State Dairy Margin Protection Sign Up Numbers
USDA released the state-by-state participation rate in the Dairy Margin Protection Program this morning, again showing that 50.4% of U.S. farms enrolled. Enrolled farms represent nearly 60% of U.S. milk production.
The highest rate of sign-up came in Nevada, with 90% of the state’s 20 dairy producers signing up. Utah has the second highest rate of sign-up at 80%. Arizona, Colorado, Georgia, Illinois, Massachusetts, Nebraska, North Carolina and Texas all had signup rates exceeding 70%.
Of the top five dairy states, California had 69% signup; Wisconsin, 54%; Idaho, 66%, New York, 48%, and Pennsylvania, 30%. Wyoming had the lowest signup, 5%, with just 20 of its 128 producers enrolling.
Nationally, 55% of those enrolling in the program also “bought up” coverage above the $4/cwt catastrophic level.
