Should We Expect a Warmer Winter?

With summer just weeks away from ending and harvest season just around the corner, farmers are already starting to wonder what lies ahead for the winter months.

According to the National Weather Service Climate Prediction Center,a warmer winter may actually be in the forecast. The three-month outlook predicts that parts of the country have a 40-50% probability of having higher than average winter temperatures. 

Three-Month Temperature Probability Outlook: Nov. 2019 – Jan. 2020

The outlook suggests this winter will contrast last year’s season of brutal temperatures and the heavy amounts of snow much of America’s farmland experienced in 2018.

Three-Month Precipitation Probability Outlook: Nov. 2019 – Jan. 2020

The three-month forecast also predicts normal to slightly above normal precipitation, good news for parts of the Midwest that saw several barns collapse due to heavy snowfall.
